The documentary Taiwan B-Movies explores the unexpected trend of sensational crime films flourished in late 1970s, especially under the martial law and strict political censorship. Prof Dr. Jhy-Wey Shieh as Taiwan ambassador to Germany and literature professor, he is familiar with the history and the development of early political and democracy movements in Taiwan. In Conversation with Jaye, curator of Taiwan Film Festival, Shieh shares us what he’s seen and experienced when he was a young student. How unimageable and mysterious it was under the martial law, strict censorship and political repression, as well as the vibrant picture of cultural scene in late 1970s.
TAIPEILOVE* is a documentary about Taiwanese queers and their personal experiences as well as their struggles in traditional Chinese society. Though in 2019, Taiwan legalized the same-sex marriage and became the only country in Asia where same-sex marriage is legal. Nevertheless, how free, safe and happy can gays and lesbians live in Taiwanese society? What role do religion, societal and cultural expectations play?
Liu is German-Chinese filmmaker who lives and works in Berlin. In interview with Kevin, Taiwanese novelist based in Berlin, director Liu describes the how she portrays Taiwanese queers in film and tells the stories full of love and tears.
